A Low Hum Discord - Forums and Chat
Back in the early 2000s, through the nzmusic.com (NZM) forums were how A Low Hum began. They were where I met the first contributors to the zine, found bands for shows, organised tours, found peoples whose places we could crash at on tour, and most importantly, found a community. Seeing how many others nerded out was so key in so many of the ways I've approached event design and my projects - especially learning to trust my gut because I can see on these forums I'm not the only music obsessive nerd out there.
One of the ways I see communities staying connected, navigating difficult times is through online group chat events and shared experiences, which is why I have so many of these planned, as well as the in-person events. (You can read more on this topic here). Primarily the new A Low Hum Discord is a place for live chat during screenings of archival documents like A Tasteful Amount of Chaos, CALHTV27 Reruns, a possible Puppies film, a new edit of Movement (the A Low Hum ‘tours’ film), and other projects that can become shared experiences - as well as the various plans I have for usage of it during Camp A Low Hum 2027 - but it could also be so much more.
As I was setting up the Discord, alongside finishing the Art of A Low Hum books, I remembered how important connecting with community was for me at the beginning, how essential it was for meeting others to collaborate with. So I’ve included extra chat spaces and channels for people to share and discuss events in their communities, in case this can also become a hub for others to find like-minded people and sparking projects.
Maybe it’ll be a bunch of tumbleweed between the live chat events, and that’s fine. But if you’re looking for somewhere to hang out online, or just want to be ready for the screenings and events, don’t be a stranger.
